Shop drawing - A Fortitude for Fabrication Industry

Any sophisticated structures will need to be constructed with less or no errors. The structural efficiency can only be achieved by the Fabrication shop drawings. These drawings can be designed by the contractors, manufacturers and structural designers. One of the major uses of this document is to deliver the information regarding the components included in the structure. These components may include elevators, steel, trusses, pre-cast concrete, windows, appliances, cabinets, air conditioning units, etc.
Every customer is advised to analyse the provided shop drawing with an architect and the contractor. There are many firms who help to develop these drawings as per the customer’s requirements. Some of the parameters that are included in the drawings are stated in the below sections.

Views of the fabrication drawing:

A fabrication drawing comprises of multiple illustrations of the component from different views. These views help the fabricators to describe the features and the locations of the whole component. Some of the information provided by the views are;

• Axonometric views
These views deliver the component features and provide a complete picture of the component to the fabricators and suppliers. The designers exclude mentioning dimensions of the view in the drawings.

• Orthographic Projection
These projections help to provide a better understanding by denoting the perspectives that are 90° rotated from each other. The sophisticated pattern of the structure’s front view is represented by the orthographic projection.

• Sectional Views
A designer combines orthographic and sectional view for the better illustration. Some designers even place the sectional view behind the corresponding orthographic view.

• Assembling drawing
The client should provide the illustrating components that are relative to each other from which the designer builds up the fabrication shop drawings. The designers even test the functionality of the connected components that can be used in the difficult assembly process. These drawings use disassembled and sectional views.

• Featuring Dimensions
Fabricators help to indicate the feature sizes and locations using the basic rules which reduce the errors and fabricating time. The dimensions are plotted onto the single view to reduce the errors.
Some of the information that need to be noticed in the designer’s drawings are

• Dimensions
• Manufacturing conventions
• Fabrication instructions
• Construction documents for reference to the fabricators.
• Placement information

Some designers and contractors provide the symbols, data regarding the component installation. The materials listed in the drawing can be discussed with mechanical contractors, electrical contractors and supervisors to bring the meaningful fabrication.

The shop drawing is used to check the installation on site. Suppliers visit the site drawing to verify the key dimensions for accuracy particularly on refurbishment and renovation projects. There are many advisable tools available for the customers. The fabricating firms use the legitimate tools like CAD to incorporate all the dimensions, information required to build up the fabrication drawing. These drawings can be used to fabricate the building structures, concrete reinforcing bars, electrical and mechanical structures. Many identifiers are used to describe the variations by the fabricators. The fabrication drawings make installation, renovation and construction work easier with less error resulting in an efficient structure for the clients.
