What is Structural design? What is the Process of Structural Design?

Structural design is the methodological investigation of the structure’s strength, rigidity and stability. The key objective of this design is to produce a firm structure that is capable of resisting the applied loads without any failure, especially during its life term.

Importance of a Proper Structural design:


•    The key purpose of designing a structure is to transmit the load or support the load.
•    If the structure is not designed in the right manner, then the load may exceed the specifications of the design and the device may end up with the performance failure
•    This may result in improper functioning.
•    This may also result in many serious consequences.
•    This emphasizes the need for designing a strong structure that can also minimize the chances of expensive failures.

The Process of Structural design:

Any designing process of the structure may require many detailed computations.

The process of Structural design is classified into three phases and they include:

•    Planning: In the planning phase, various factors are taken into considerations that may affect the dimension of a structure and its layout. The core concern of planning is to design a good functioning structure 
•    Designing: This phase involves considering the details, including the dimensions and proportions of the structural elements 
•    Construction: This phase involves personnel mobilization, procurement of equipment and materials like, transportation, on-site erection. However, in this phase, redesigning is required in case of unforeseen difficulties like the foundation problem or unavailability of the materials required for construction of the structure.
