Understanding the Sheet Metal Fabrication Process

Since time immemorial man has been harnassing metal for his own use, regardless if it is to put a roof over his head or to create an ornament that would be the envy of those around him. With the changes in technology, the modern man has found so much more use of the metal around him. Such is the case with the sheet metal.

The sheet metal is popular among those in the construction indstry as a pliable thin material that can be used for homes as well as for ornaments. In most cases, sheet metal might have a thickness of anywhere between 8 gauge to 30 gauge. Not many people may know it but sheet metal does not come in just steel and aluminum. It can also come in the form of gold, silver, silver, nickel, and brass tin. Now, the process of turning a sheet metal into something more useful is what is known as sheet metal fabrication.

The first to fabricating a metal sheet is the creation of fabrication shop drawings. Depending on the size of the drawing, the owner could either get the services of companies that provide fabrication shop drawings, or they can do it themselves with the help of a graphing paper. Once the drawing has been done, you can now purchase the needed amount of sheet metal. You have to make sure that you provide an allowance for mistakes. That means, your order should be 10% more than what your measurements tell you.

With the help of a paper or a cardboard, you would then need to create a full-size pattern of your design. You can then create a steel detailing using Tekla or any other software applications available to you. Keep in mind, however, that creating a steel detailing using Tekla can make the whole process of coming up with the mock up much easier and faster. So why the need for a mockup? By creating a mock up, you can easily inspect if there are inherent flaws to the design. You can then correct these flaws before putting the design into the sheet metal. Once you have finalized the design, you can put the pattern on the sheet metal and start cutting out the pieces. Make sure that you wear gloves and other safety equipment in order to avoid getting injured during the whoole fabrication process. You would also need to double check your measurements as well as secure the pattern on the sheet metal before you actually start cutting it up. To make the process easier, be sure to use only sharp cutting shears that are meant for sheet metal.

There are a few things that you need to keep in mind when fabricating sheet metal. For example, if you would be using intricate and complex designs, you might want to consider making use of laser cutters in order to cut the sheet metal. You would also need to have an awl for those indentations that you might need to make in order to create your design.
